Actor Postcards

Sunday, January 15th, 2012

For actors, to be cast in film and television roles, you really need casting directors to know and remember you so that they will call you in for auditions. Postcards are a cost-effective way to keep in touch with them. Here are five reasons why sending postcard mailings are a great marketing tool to casting directors:

1. Postcards are cheaper to send than headshots.

Right now, it costs about a dollar to send out a full 8×10 headshot with your resume and cover letter. A postcard stamp is only 28 cents. Plus, it costs less to get postcards duplicated than headshots.

That means, all things considered, you can hit casting directors three more times with a postcard for the same amount of money you pay for a headshot. Postcards give you a great bang for your marketing buck.

2. Casting Directors see your photo immediately with a postcard.

When you send out your postcards, your name and face are in the casting director’s office, crossing their desk the very next day. A headshot has to be opened and taken out of the envelope before someone sees your picture and credits. That is good, too, because they might keep it on file. But it is more expensive and they won’t see it as immediately.

One postcard in the right place at the right time might be all it takes for the casting director to call you in for an audition. You might be surprised at how good some of their memories are after they’ve seen your postcard a few times.

3. A Photo Postcard keeps your message short, sweet, and to the point.

Work in the acting business comes and goes. You might have a few great gigs in a row, then nothing. Instead of trying to pad out a letter with exciting news, postcards allow you to highlight the one or two best bits of news to let the casting directors know about right now.

Also, if you don’t have as many credits as some, a postcard mailing lets you make the most of the ones that are on your resume. Since you don’t have room on the postcard to write your whole life story, you can pick the one juiciest, most appealing thing about you.

4. Lots more people can see your photo postcard.

In addition to the casting directors themselves, many other industry people pass through their offices and might see your postcard lying around. It could also catch the eye of a casting assistant, who frequently go on to become casting directors themselves. So when they see your postcard, they’ll start to get to know you early in their career.

The point is that you never know who might see your postcard and start to become familiar with you or even may have a role that you would be perfect for.

5. More frequent marketing with less effort.

Here’s a little business statistic to help you understand the importance of marketing yourself over time. It takes an average of five to seven contacts with someone before they will do business. And that’s if they are remembering you with each contact.

It is also five times easier to get someone who already knows you to do business with you again than it is to get someone new to do business with you. In Hollywood, it’s more like ten or twenty times easier to get someone to do business with you when they know you versus not knowing you. That’s why it’s critical to get the casting directors to know you.

SUMMARY

When it comes to marketing to casting directors, you must keep getting your face in front of them if you want to get calls – and this means EVEN if you have an agent and EVEN if you don’t. Your agent is never going to contact as many casting directors as you need to reach in a given month. And yes, sometimes casting directors will call you directly for auditions. So keep marketing yourself to casting directors, whether you have an agent or not.

When you send your photo to the casting director several times over a period of time, they are more likely to remember you and more likely to call you in for an audition and hire you. And if a casting director has hired you, it’s critical that you keep in touch with them. It will be far easier to get them to hire you again than to get a new casting director to hire you for the very first time.Image Source: http://images.google.com
